Darren John Dreifort was one of the more dominant pitchers ever produced by the tradition-rich Wichita State University baseball program. The hard-throwing right-hander was originally drafted by the New York Mets in 1990, but did not sign with them. He pitched three years for Wichita State and helped the Shockers to three Missouri Valley Conference championships and a runner-up finish in the 1993 College World Series. Dreifort finished with an 11-1 record in ’93 and was named first-team All-American and the NCAA Player of the Year. He was also named first-team All-American in 1992. Dreifort was selected as the second overall pick by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the first round of the 1993 amateur draft and made his major league debut on April 7, 1994. Dreifort won 39 games for the Dodgers in six seasons, but his career was cut short by numerous injuries and he officially retired on February 23, 2006, at the age of 33. Dreifort is also a member of Wichita State’s Shocker Sports Hall of Fame and the Wichita Sports Hall of Fame. Born May 3, 1972 – Wichita, Kansas.
