GARFIELD “DOC” WEEDE

One of the most widely respected track coaches in the country, Garfield W. Weede was also a highly successful football coach and athletic director at Pittsburg State University. While a student at the University of Pennsylvania in 1904, he was selected to the Walter Camp All-American Football Team. He first became athletic director at Washburn University, serving from 1905 to 1909 and coached the football team to a 19-5-4 record in three seasons. He returned to Cooper College (Sterling) where he served as athletic director from 1909-17. In 1919, he was hired as coach of all sports and director of athletics at Pittsburg Manual Training Normal (Pittsburg State). He coached the football team to a 50-31-6 record from 1919 to 1928 including the school’s first undefeated team in 1924. Weede coached track at Pittsburg from 1919 until 1951 when he retired at age 70. During his tenure, his classy Gorilla relay teams were among the most consistent winners at the nation’s major track meets and captured 15 conference titles including 11 consecutive. Weede retired as the winningest coach in the college division of the Drake relays with 27 relay victories and also coached 22 relay wins for PSU at the KU Relays. In 1930, his Gorillas upset Notre Dame and Marquette in the Central Collegiate Meet in Milwaukee. Inducted into the Helms Foundation Hall of Fame, 1951; NAIA Track and Field Hall of Fame, 1954; Drake Relays Hall of Fame, 1954. Born November 26, 1880 – Burlington, Iowa.
