Nicknamed ‘The Little General’ or ‘Skip,’ Gene William Mauch won 1,901 games as a baseball manager in the Major Leagues from 1960-87. Nineteen of his former players went on the become managers. Mauch was named the manager of the Philadelphia Phillies in 1960 and spent nine seasons with the Phillies. Mauch became the first manager of the Montreal Expos in 1969 and spent seven seasons there before taking over the Minnesota Twins in 1976. In 1981, he started the first of two stints with the California Angeles. He managed the Angels in 1981-82 and again in 1985-87. He returned briefly to baseball in 1995 as a bench coach for the Kansas City Royals. Mauch was named the National League Manager of the Year in 1962, ’64 and ’73, but also held the distinction of managing the most years (26) and the most games (3,942) without reaching the World Series. He was close three times – 1964 with Philadelphia and 1982 and ’86 with California – but came up short each time. During his nine seasons as a player in the big leagues, Mauch was teammates with several Hall of Famers, including Jackie Robinson, Warren Spahn, Stan Musial and Ted Williams.
