When listing the great high school basketball traditions in the state of Kansas, the McPherson Bullpups immediately come to mind, and Jay L. Frazier of LaCrosse is a big reason why. Frazier’s constant challenge to his basketball players and students was, “I think you can do it … do you think you can?” Frazier’s faith in his players led them to one state tournament after another. Considered one of the best high school basketball coaches ever in the state, Frazier compiled a 511-179 record in 31 years of coaching. Twenty-six of those years were in McPherson where Frazier guided the Bullpups to 409 wins and 160 losses. During the period from 1957-83, the Bullpups won 10 Central Kansas League championships, made 12 trips to the state tournament and appeared in seven state title games. Under Frazier’s leadership, McPherson won three consecutive state championships in 1972, ’73 and ’74. But, Frazier was a success before he came to McPherson. After graduating from Fort Hays State University, Frazier spent four season at Burdett High School where he posted a 79-14 record and led the team to the 1954 Class BB state championship. His second state title came during his time at Pretty Prairie High School in 1957 when the Bulldogs won the Class B state championship. Frazier was the first of only two coaches in Kansas high school history to coach three different schools to state championships. Born May 19, 1928 – LaCrosse, Kansas.
