A four-time first-team All-American basketball player at Kansas University (1978-81) and two-time U.S. Olympian, Wichita’s Lynette Woodard revolutionized women’s basketball during her storied career. Considered one of the greatest female basketball players of all time, she graduated from Kansas University in 1981 as the women’s collegiate all-time leading scorer with 3,649 points, a 26.2 point average. She was named the Wade Trophy winner as the outstanding female basketball player in the nation in 1981. Twice a member of the United States Olympic Team, she was captain of the 1984 squad which captured the gold medal in Los Angeles. In 1985, Woodard became the first female member of the world-famous Harlem Globetrotters. In 1996, she was named by unanimous vote, the greatest female player in the Big-Eight Conference history. Despite playing her college career without the 3-point shot and the smaller women’s basketball, the 6-foot Woodard scored over 400 points more than any other woman in Big Eight history and also set the conference rebound record with 1, 716. As a prepster, she led Wichita North High School to state championships in 1975 and 1977. Lynette Woodard scored 1,678 points and collected 1,030 rebounds in just 62 high school games. Inducted into the National High School Sports Hall of Fame; the GTE Academic Hall of Fame; University of Kansas Athletic Hall of Fame; Kansas State High School Activities Association Hall of Fame; Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame; and the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
