One of the greatest players in the history of Wichita State University’s baseball program, Phillip Raymond Stephenson hit 57 home runs in his college career and was named one of the three greatest college baseball players of the 20th Century by Collegiate Baseball. Stephenson was one of the Shockers’ first great stars, playing for his brother, WSU head coach Gene Stephenson, from 1979-82. Stephenson was noted for his ability to drive the ball that resulted in 91 career doubles and 25 triples. He captured the attention of college baseball by hitting in an NCAA-record 47 consecutive games in 1981. Stephenson helped lead the Shockers to a runner-up finish in the 1982 College World Series, by hitting .399 with 30 doubles and a national-best 87 stolen bases. He was named the NCAA Player of the Year and Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year in 1982. Stephenson was named first-team All-America at first base in 1981 and 1982, and was a three-time All-MVC selection. During his career, he established nine Shocker offensive records. Stephenson was drafted by the Oakland A’s in 1982 and played 14 years of professional ball, including four seasons in the major leagues. Stephenson was inducted into the WSU Sports HOF and is also a member of the Guthrie (Okla.) High School HOF, the Wichita Sports HOF, Missouri Valley Conference HOF and National Collegiate Baseball HOF. Born September 19, 1960 – Guthrie, Okla. Graduated Guthrie (Okla.)
