Ralph Willard Terry, a resident of Larned, Kansas, pitched in the major leagues for 12 seasons and won 107 games. He won two games in the 1962 World Series for the New York Yankees and was named the most valuable player of the Series against the San Francisco Giants. A tall, smooth-throwing right-hander, Terry spent parts of eight seasons with the Yankees and helped the team win World Series titles in 1961, ’62. Terry was a part of two of the most famous plays in World Series history. He gave up the game-winning home run by Pittsburgh’s Bill Mazeroski in the seventh game of the 1960 Series and pitched a complete-game, four-hitter in the seventh game of the 1962 Series to win 1-0 when Willie McCovey’s line drive was caught by teammate Bobby Richardson with two runners on in the bottom of the ninth inning. From 1960-64, Terry won 66 games with the Yankees, including a 16-3 record in 1961 and 23-12 record in ’62, and had 48 complete games. Terry, who was also recruited to play football at Oklahoma A&M, made his major league debut in 1956 at the age of 20. He played for the Yankees (1956-57, 1959-64), Kansas City Athletics (1957-59, 1966), Cleveland Indians (1965) and New York Mets (1966-67). After baseball, Terry became a professional golfer and is a lifetime member of the PGA of America. He qualified for and played in four PGA Tour events in 1981 and ‘82. In 1986, Terry started playing on the Senior PGA Tour and played in 102 tournaments. Born January 9, 1936 – Big Cabin, Okla. Graduated Chelsea (Okla.)
