Little River’s Sandra Myers was one of the greatest female track and field stars in Kansas history. In high school, Myers won 13 individual gold medals at the State Outdoor Track and Field Championships, one relay gold medal and led Little River to three team championships. She was a four-time state champ in both the 100 and 200, a three-time long jump champ, and she added two titles in the 400. Myers never lost a State Outdoor event in her four seasons. At the State Indoor meets, she won 10 more individual gold medals and led Little River to three indoor team titles. Her long jump mark of 19’-7 ¼” in the 1979 State Outdoor stands as the best in any class and her 20’-6 ½” leap during a 1979 AAU meet, is still the girls’ state record. Myers attended the University of California at Northridge where, as a freshman in 1980, she led her team to the NCAA title by winning the 400 meter dash and 400 meter hurdles. She set the American record in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.4 that same year. Myers married Spaniard Javier Echarri in 1986 and obtained her Spanish nationality a year later. She competed for Spain in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, and the 1996 Games in Atlanta, Georgia. Concentrating on the 400 meters, Myers was the silver medalist in the 1991 World Indoor (50.99 seconds) and bronze medalist in the 1991 World Outdoor (49.76 seconds). She held Spanish national records in 12 different events at one time and was given the “Queen Sofia” trophy for Spanish Sportswoman of the Year in 1990. Myers was inducted into the Kansas State High School Activities Hall of Fame in 1981. Born January 9, 1961 - Little River, Kansas.
