Growing up in the shadows of the New York City skyline in northern New Jersey, Tamecka Dixon’s road to stardom took her all across the country. A standout on every basketball court she stepped on, along the road, Dixon etched her name as one of the all-time greats to play in the state of Kansas.
A highly touted recruit from Linden High School, Dixon scored over 2,000 points in just three seasons while leading the Tigers to two state championships in 1992 and 1993. Dixon was recruited by top college programs from all across the country but chose to continue her career for fellow Kansas Sports Hall of Fame Inductee Marian Washington, who was originally from nearby West Chester, Pennsylvania.
Upon arriving on campus in Lawrence, Dixon made an immediate impact, mostly coming off the bench where she averaged seventeen minutes per contest as a freshman. As a sophomore, Dixon started half of the games that season while averaging eleven points per contest.
Dixon was poised for a breakout year as a junior in 1996 for the Jayhawks and she didn’t disappoint. In the last year of the Big 8 Conference, Dixon averaged seventeen points with 4.2 rebounds and 3.2 assists on her way to earning first-team All-Conference honors and being named the Big 8 Conference Player of the Year.
In 1997, Dixon led the Jayhawks to a regular season Big 12 Conference title and yet again earned Conference Player of the Year. Averaging 20.8 points per game and with 5.6 rebounds, Dixon was also named an All-American selection in 1997, just the third Jayhawk to earn such honors in program history.
For her career at the University of Kansas, Dixon scored 1,689 points, compiled 337 assists, and totaled 209 steals, all of which still rank in the top ten in school history. Dixon led the Jayhawks to a combined record of 89-33 record, two regular season conference titles, and four appearances in the NCAA Tournament, including a Sweet Sixteen appearance in 1996.
Dixon graduated from the University of Kansas following the 1997 season but her story didn’t end there. During the inaugural WNBA Draft, Dixon was selected with the fourteenth overall pick by the Los Angeles Sparks.
Again, Dixon’s impact was immediate while leading the Sparks in three point field goals and steals. Dixon averaged double digit points in six of her nine seasons with the Sparks while making three WNBA All-Star games in 2001, 2002, and 2003. She also helped lead the Sparks to back-to-back WNBA Championships in 2001 and 2002.
As of 2016, Dixon still holds a number top spots in the history of the Sparks organization, including ranking in the top ten in games played, games started, minutes played, field goals, three-point field goals, free throws made, total rebounds, assists, steals, and points.
Dixon finished her career with three seasons with the Houston Comets and one season with the Indiana Fever.
In total, Dixon scored 3,500 career points with 961 assists and 354 steals in her professional career.
From New Jersey to California and many places in between, Tamecka Dixon dazzled with her fantastic play on the court and today, the state of Kansas honors her for her contributions to the game in the Sunflower State.
